Man this Web site is slow

I really dislike writing about this blog inside of the blog, it just seems a little more meta than I really want to be. That being so I feel the need to comment on something that has been bugging me. For the last few years the server has continued to bog down despite my best efforts to keep the database clean and everything else up to date.

I did a time count on how long it took for the site to come up this morning and it turned out to be 24 seconds and that was before the server even fully connected. It would be easy to blame my host but I’m currently running a WordPress build on another site through the same host with little to no lag.

I have come to the conclusion that I need to wipe things clean and start fresh. I am going to download the archive of posts and hopfully include them in the revamped database. I’m also thinking of pushing the blog to the top level of the domain (getting rid of the /blog/) as the main way of getting to the site.

Sorry for this “inside baseball” post but I just wanted to let the few people who care know that the site might be offline for a little bit. Also links might need adjusting. I’ll keep a re-direct file in the /blog/ directory so it shouldn’t break things too much, but we’ll play it by ear.

Update: It has taken a little work but I think I have cleared a lot of things up with the site. There might be some things that are still off kilter and I have disabled some of the older features but for now this will serve me pretty well. Things are a lot snappier than they used to be.
